I know a lot of people ask for advice about gear, tapering, what to eat, etc but here's some advice that will work for anybody at any race. If you're 3 weeks out from a 100 miler, you should never walk around barefoot. Why? Let's say you wake up Sunday morning, grab the paper and head out on your back deck to hang out with your labs and then you kick a wrought iron chair. It hurts so bad that I am thinking about cutting it off with a very sharp knife or pair of scissors. I wonder how long it will bleed?

Oooouch. Wrought iron chairs don't have much give, do they? I've accidentally kicked many a hard object (walls, chairs) with bare feet before, but never that bad ... and not 3 weeks before a 100 miler. Humorous advice, but here's seriously hoping it gets better in time.

Oooh, I hope you didn't break it? The only time I ever broke a bone was from jamming my foot into something.. broke the toe in three places.

And for all the times I've dropped potted plants on my bare feet, stepped on very sharp pinecones or broken glass, dead bees with live stingers, etc... you'd think I'd wear shoes now whenever I go outside.

Murphy's Law of Tapering. Happens every time. Ever' dang time. If it's not a wrought-iron chair, it's the luggage compartment doors opening on a 747 flying overhead, dropping a suitcase full of dirty underwear and a...a...a dead car battery on your head.

I hate tapering.

It's not broken only because I have broken the dang thing so many times I don't think I have anything left but bone chips. I was planning on loosing during the race not before.

Got mine on dresser while chasing a kid. Good object lesson: don't run in the house. Heal fast...
