Details
Franklin, NC – Outdoor 76, in partnership with the North Carolina Bartram Trail Society, United States Forest Service and Nantahala Hiking Club, will host the Inaugural 25K and 50K Naturalist Epic Trail Race on the Bartram Trail, Saturday October 10, 2015. This is anticipated to be one of the toughest trail races in the Southeast US. Known for its seclusion, limited resources/access points and an unforgiving ridgeline route that is almost completely void of flat ground; this is one of the ultimate tests of legs and will power.
The race will start at 8:00am, on Town Square in the heart of downtown Franklin, NC. The course welcomes runners with a 3.5-mile road run (warm-up) out of town to the Wallace Branch trailhead for the Bartram Trail. From this point, runners engage with one of the toughest stretches of single-track in the region. Naturalist 25K runners will climb 6,500 ft.; more than two-times the topographic prominence in 11.5 miles on the trail, with a well-earned finish at Wayah Bald. The 25K course isn’t all about climbing either, while it starts at 2,200ft and climbs to 5,300ft, there is still 3,400ft of combined descent on the course. Naturalist 50K runners will turn around at Wayah Bald and head back to Franklin along the same route, finishing in downtown Franklin at the William Bartram memorial statue.
This is a limited-aid race, with stations spaced as much as 5 miles apart. Runners will be allowed to set up a cache with race officials. Cache items subject to approval and provided to staff no later than 7:00pm on October 9, 2015. Details with aid station locations, course map and safety info will be provided after registrations are processed. Early registration fee for the 25K is $65 and $80 for the 50K, until Friday August 28th 2015, or until the event is booked. For the inaugural event, there is a (100) runner cap with registrations processed on a first-come, first –serve basis. Any registrants submitted after the cap is met will be placed on a waiting list in the order in which registrations are received.
Proceeds from the Naturalist Epic trail races will go to the North Carolina Bartram Trail Society (NCBTS) to assist in their continued efforts to maintain and promote this amazing resource. The Naturalist 25K & 50K race is held under permits from USFS, and cooperation with the NCBTS.
For the safety of participants and integrity of the event, all press, media/professional organizations intending to cover the event must apply for credentials with race organizers, as well as obtain permits from all pertinent government agencies and NCBTS.
Registration can be completed on Active.com or at Outdoor 76 in Franklin, NC. Any questions can be emailed to [email protected].
