This is in it's 18th year in 2009; it's called 'Half Voyager' because in late July the full 50 mile Voyager Trail Race (which loops from Duluth-Carlton and back) is held. There were challenges, hills, running water with wet rocks, roots, stumps etc., this year there's been no rain so it was all dirt and no mud (thank goodness) - a great workout.

This event begins at 6:00 a.m. at the Duluth Zoo; 71st Ave W & Grant Avenue. The event directors, Eugene and Barb Curnow, are terrific and even greeted my by name (before we ever met in person - I just talked to her on the phone for a few minutes!). I had heard scary stories about this event as it covers some very rugged untouched trails between Duluth and Carlton, MN (south of Duluth; adjacent to Interstate 35 headed towards Minneapolis/Saint Paul). With the dry weather we have had this year, it was mostly dirt - but in years past with wet summers, people have reported being up to their hips in water when crossing the wet rocks in the water, but this year, again, it was all dry. My biggest problem (and this had to do with lack of training) was not going up steep hills - but going down them! Otherwise, a great event, and as I am writing this the next day, I've already worked out today, I feel great, and my body recovered much better than from a typiclal road marathon. Nice finisher shirt at the end (no medal - a bit peeved about that but oh well). Great, talkative people along the way. I'd rather have that anyway.
